The American Pit Bull Terrier or Pitbull is not an officially recognized breed by the AKC, at least not yet.
Although the American Pit Bull Terrier or Pitbull is not officially recognized, we often hear many comments and legends about its alleged aggressive nature. This is due to the powerful jaws it possesses, something that divides the world between those who like it and those who do not.
The truth is that this breed must be considered reliable, although it is not for everyone, but this could also apply to many other dog breeds. What we want to say with this is that a Pitbull’s owner must be a person who does not show any aggressive attitudes.
Not intending to replace the work done by canine expert associations, we have tried to investigate the origins of the American Pit Bull Terrier, a descendant of the ancient molossers used by Romans in fights.
From that moment until the 18th century, this breed was known as Bulldog. The term Terrier was added to its name in the following century. In 1909, the American Pit Bull Association was created to control and draft a standard for the breed.
Although there is no standard that defines the common characteristics of this type of dog, it was possible to trace the selective evolution that led to the birth of the American Pit Bull Terrier, born from the molossers that in the 18th century were called Bulldog.
At the end of the 19th century, the terrier breed was included in the breeding process, which led to the creation of several varieties, including the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pitbull Terrier.
Unfortunately, violent episodes in their past have fueled a bad reputation for dogs of this breed. In fact, they are extremely reliable dogs, but they are not suitable for all types of owners.
The specimens of this breed are of medium size, powerful and dynamic. They have a healthy musculature and an elegant appearance. In addition, they are always attentive to their surroundings.
The Pitbull dog is a medium-sized animal with a structure that could be defined as square, almost geometrically as the length from shoulder to tail and from shoulder to ground is almost identical.
The head of this dog, when viewed from above or from the side, is wedge-shaped, but when viewed from the front, its skull is round with a well-developed jaw.
Pitbulls have rosebud shaped ears with an upward curl in. Unfortunately, ear cropping is chosen in some countries. Its small, sunken eyes are oval or triangular in shape. While it does not have a particularly sweet look, the eyes give this breed an intelligent gaze.
The Pitbull’s nose can be of different colors. It is always well-developed, and its nostrils are wide-open. The neck is very powerful and muscular. The short and strong back hides a deep, well arched thorax.
Its long, thick tail tilts upward in an alert situation.
Pitbull: Coat Colors
The Pitbull can be found in the following varieties of colors:
- Brownish red
Brave and courageous, this is a very powerful dog. Its temperament is its “weak point”. This is the reason why many people, even animal lovers, are not convinced that they can get used to the temperament of an American Pit Bull Terrier.
Hopefully, they will change their minds by reading this article and listening to the breed experts. The Pitbull is attached in a very special way to only one person, its owner. It chooses him as its absolute trainer, its guide; the person it will be thinking about every day and for whom it will act.
Agile and fast, rough, and alert, the Pitbull is not only a good defense dog, but also a great companion to have fun with. Believe it or not, it is a breed that is well suited to family life. It even gets along well with children. Its temperament will depend in some way on the relationship we establish with this breed since for decades this dog was selected only for its fighting instinct.
This does not mean that it is born to be aggressive and bad, it is up to us, its owners. We must not awaken in pitbulls their aggressive past through manipulation that we can avoid and condemn by choice.
Pitbull puppies when born are not registered at the F.C.I. Even the American Kennel Club does not recognize this breed, widely known as the American Pit Bull Terrier, as official. So far, the United Kennel Club is the only organization that keeps an entry register.
At present there are two standards that are used as a reference to “evaluate” a puppy.
The red nose is one of the three colors that a Pitbull dog can have. Both the ADBA (American Dog Breeders Association) and UKC (United Kennel Club) standards mention the following varieties: Black nose, red nose, and blue nose.
We use the word Pitbull as a diminutive of “American Pit Bull Terrier”. This is not a sign of disrespect or negligence. The same goes for the Amstaff, which is short for American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffy, which stands for Staffordshire Bull terrier.
This breed is still waiting to be recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club), the largest dog organization in the United States, though it has already been approved by others, such as the American Dog Breeders Association and the United Kennel Club.
The Pitbull as guard dog
The Pitbull is the most chosen dog by those looking for a guard dog. This is partly due to its body and partly due to its temperament. It is not its size that makes it a great watchdog since it is of medium-small size, but its great power and dynamism.
Agile and intelligent, this dog has a solid and muscular body. Always attentive to its surroundings, it looks at the intruder or the attacker with a determined, serious, and penetrating gaze.
The Pitbull can’t be asked for more as it is an excellent watchdog.
