Griffon Belge: Origins
First of all, let’s analyze the origin of this Griffon, known as a “Belgian citizen”, but it is not what it appears to be.
In fact, along the years there has been a lot of debate to establish its origins and understand which dog breeds were involved in its Family Tree. Many people believed that in the first stages of evolution this dog was bred with a small-sized short-haired dog named “Smousje” from around the city of Brussels.
From the “Smousje” genetic characteristics mixed with other dog breeds like Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Affenpinscher, Yorkshire Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer and Pug; three breeds similar but different were born:
- Brussels Griffon
- Griffon Belge
- Petit Brabançon
Throughout history, the Griffon Belge enjoyed different types of reputations, but the truth is that is not a very popular dog yet, although certainly it has a lot of fans.

The most peculiar characteristic of the Griffon Belge is without question its face; it has an adorable and funny facial expression.
We compared its facial expression with the one of humans, thanks to its sparkling little eyes, and also for the particular small beard that decorates the Griffon’s face, especially under its chin.
The Griffon Belge’s coat is soft, smooth and silky almost velvety to the touch. The ears are straight but they do not stick out. A particular feature of this breed is definitely its eyes, which are round, bulgy and separated from each other; they are almost uneven to the rest of the face. The adorable eyes are black-colored, decorated with black and very long eyelashes.
