The Arabian greyhound, also called Sloughi, is a fast and agile dog. It is a dog breed to be discovered and not pursued as it will be impossible to catch.

The Arabian greyhound or Sloughi is a large dog, with a rather marked bone structure. As all greyhounds, they are covered by muscles from the tail to the muzzle. Our friend has a rather lean body as opposed to the Sighthounds’ ones, but with a larger head. The morphological category of this Moroccan greyhound is Graioid.

Sloughi is the real and original Moroccan name for this Arabian greyhound. Although this breed has been present for thousands of years in North Africa, the most reliable hypothesis about its origins is that it comes from the East.

Along with the Saluki, our Sloughi is one of the few dogs loved by the Arabs. They especially admire the speed of its movements and the quickness of its reflexes. There is a legend in the Arabian tradition that mentions that when an Arabian greyhound observes a gazelle cutting a blade of grass, it can catch it before it has finished chewing it.

Sloughi (Arabian Greyhound): Temperament

Being a fast and agile dog, it is evident that it needs broth plenty of exercise and to be outdoors. Although it does not have an impetuous character, it is not a classic apartment dog, unless we promise it and ourselves many walks in the parks, excursions in the fields and daily “runs”.

There is no doubt that this is an extremely intelligent dog, its good-looking is just the beginning. It is cautious with strangers. First, it studies them, and then it tries to understand who it is dealing with. But the Sloughi doesn’t last long with this procedure and becomes as affectionate as it is with its family, including children… Although it is not really fond of them.

It is not an aggressive dog, but certainly the Arabian greyhound is reserved. In addition, it dislikes the idea of living with rowdy children who treat it like a stuffed toy. Leaving that aside, it is an easy to handle dog that is very well-behaved and not very noisy. In fact, it hardly ever barks.

Sloughi (Arabian Greyhound): Breeders

It is bred mostly in Morocco, and a little all over the world. It is not a very widespread breed. But you may get lucky. Sometimes breeders of other types of greyhounds also have specimens or litters of this breed, which they sought previously for clients who did not want to go directly to a certified kennel in Morocco.

On the Internet, you may find Sloughi breeders, especially in the United States. However, you may find specialized and registered breeders in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, India and South Africa.

Sloughi (Arabian Greyhound): Puppies

Long-legged and muscular from puppyhood, an Arabian greyhound may stand up to 28 inches (70 cm) at the shoulder. The body and legs show defined bony structure and strong, lean muscle. The skeletal structure is sturdy.

The Sloughi has a smooth, floating, effortless gait. This breed can run incredibly fast.

The tail is very thin and aerodynamic, i.e., it has no bangs or long hairs. The head is huge. It is flat and rounded in shape, with a small stop and elongated muzzle that ends with a small dark nose.

Its ears hang gracefully. The Sloughi’s eyes are big and generally dark. Specimens with light coats may have dark amber eyes.

The Sloughi’s coat is short and fine. Hair ranges in color. The following ones are allowed by the standard:

  • Fawn;
  • Light sand or reddish sand;
  • Brindle.

It may have a black mask and a black mantle.

Sloughi (Arabian Greyhound): Price, and Puppies For Sale

It is not easy to calculate the price of a poorly traded dog. So for accurate information, if you are planning to buy a Sloughi puppy, you better contact certified breeders and ask about this breed.

We can tell you that the Arabian greyhound is not a cheap dog. This does not mean that it is worth millions, but certainly, its physical value and scarcity have a price. The starting price for a Sloughi puppy is 1200 dollars, about 1000 English pounds.
